Wimpy Kid Gives 'Em What They Want

Unique three-week HARD LUCK U.S. tour treats more than 15,000 fans to an unprecedented event experience; tour continues in the U.K., Ireland, and Germany in December

New York, NY (November 13, 2013)—Amulet Books, an imprint of ABRAMS, announced today that Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck, the eighth book in Jeff Kinney's blockbuster series (which had the biggest U.S. first printing of any book in 2013, with 5.5 million copies), had incredible first-week worldwide sales of more than 1.3 million copies in all formats. Jeff Kinney's latest work is not only the biggest book of 2013, but it is also the funniest, as readers discover what life is like for Greg Heffley without his sidekick, Rowley Jefferson. There are more than 115 million copies of all books in the series in print around the globe.

The extensive U.S. campaign for Dairy of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck began more than six months ago and was multifaceted. It included an online cover reveal campaign; a nationwide authorless truck tour to bookstores, schools, and libraries; ongoing consumer and trade ad campaigns; exclusive printed materials for booksellers, educators, and librarians; sneak-peek promotions, and much more. These efforts led up to the largest author tour ever for the series, lasting three weeks and with stops at more than 50 bookstores in 20 cities. Kinney will visit the U.K., Ireland, and Germany in early December. On the eve of the book going on sale, November 4, Kinney greeted more than 1,000 fans in two events in Las Vegas, and a live web broadcast with him from Las Vegas was seen by more than 40,000 fans around the world. The tour runs throughout November, concluding on November 21. The Hard Luck campaign continues as the Diary of a Wimpy Kid giant helium balloon appears for the fourth time in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday, November 28, and through print and television ads.

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series has been a fixture on the USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. The series has remained consistently on the New York Times lists since the publication of the first book. The books have been sold in more than 44 territories in 42 languages.
