Richard Avedon (1923-2004) was one of the most influential
photographers of the second half of the twentieth century. His portrait
work comprises an authoritative record of his era. As a staff
photographer for Harper's Bazaar and later for Vogue, Avedon redefinied
the fashion photograph. In 1992 he was named the first staff
photographer in the history of The New Yorker. His work appears in
every major museum photography collection and his many books set a
standard for photographic publishing.
